Apple Crumble Recipe - Delicious Meal Ideas

Growing up, my grandma had an incredible way of filling our kitchen with warmth and delicious smells. Her apple crumble was legendary. It wasn’t just dessert; it was a warm hug on a plate, made with simple ingredients and a sprinkle of love.
Fast forward to today, and I still find myself swept up in the nostalgia of that dish. Writing this recipe felt like stepping back into that cozy kitchen, feeling the love.

Ingredients

Apple Filling:
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice or plain water for a milder taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 lb / 1kg tart green apples, weighed before peeling like Granny Smith
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg adds warmth and enhances the apple flavor
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar you can substitute with light brown sugar for deeper flavor
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour to lightly thicken the filling
Topping:
  • 1 cup loosely packed light brown sugar white sugar can be swapped in
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for depth in the topping
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled 125g
  • 1 cup plain flour all-purpose works best
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats quick oats work in a pinch
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method

Step 1: Preheat Your Oven
  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your crumble gets that perfect, golden texture when it bakes.
Step 2: Prepare the Apples
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into even pieces. Toss them in a large bowl with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
Step 3: Assemble the Filling
  1. Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9-inch baking dish. Spread it out evenly to ensure it cooks properly.
Step 4: Make the Topping
  1. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and vanilla extract. Mix until crumbly; it should resemble wet sand.
Step 5: Top the Apples
  1. Crumble the topping over the apple mixture, spreading it evenly. Don't worry about perfect coverage; a few gaps can be your secret to a delightful texture.
Step 6: Bake
  1. Place the baking dish in the oven. Bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. The aroma will have you counting down the minutes.
Step 7: Cool and Serve
  1. Remove from the oven and let it sit for at least 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully. Serve warm, with all those delightful pairings we talked about earlier!

Notes

  • Choose the Right Apples: Pick a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor. A combination adds complexity and depth.
  • Don’t Skimp on the Topping: Make a generous amount of topping. The crumbly texture is what makes this dish special.
  • Serve Warm: Apple crumble is best when served warm. If you have leftovers, heat them up before serving for that delightful experience.
  • Experiment with Spices: While cinnamon and nutmeg are classic, feel free to experiment with ginger or allspice for a unique twist.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: High-quality butter and fresh apples make a world of difference. Don’t compromise, especially on these core components.
