Pecan Pie - Delicious Meal Ideas

Ah, pecan pie—a dessert that evokes fond memories of family gatherings and festivals. If you’ve never made one, you might wonder what the fuss is all about. This Southern treasure may be simple in its ingredients, but it delivers complex flavors and delightful textures.
My first experience with pecan pie was during Thanksgiving at my aunt's house. The smell of toasted nuts wafted through the air, and my mouth watered in anticipation. I still remember the first bite—not too sweet, with the crunch of pecans perfectly balancing the creamy filling. This pie is a staple of comfort and nostalgia.
But what exactly is pecan pie? Let’s unravel its delicious mystery.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup 15 ml
  • 1/3 cup salted butter, at room temperature or gently melted 75 g
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar 200 g
  • 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3.75 ml
  • 1 unbaked homemade pie crust: For a stellar crust, refer to my pie crust recipe that yields two, allowing you to freeze one for later use.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon: Brings warmth to the mix.
  • 3 large eggs: Provides structure and stability.
  • 1 cup light corn syrup 240 ml
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 3 g
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 40 g
  • 1 1/2 cups pecan halves 150 g

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Pie Crust
  1. Start with your pie crust. If you have a homemade recipe, roll it out and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Trim the excess hanging over the edges, and crimp to form a decorative edge. If you’re using store-bought, simply place it in the pie pan. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Stir until well combined. Then, add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Drizzle in the maple syrup and vanilla extract, and sprinkle in the salt and cinnamon. Blend until the ingredients are fully integrated.
Step 3: Incorporate the Pecans
  1. Gently fold the pecan halves into the mixture. If you like, you can reserve a few to sprinkle on top for an appealing finish.
Step 4: Pour and Bake
  1. Pour the delicious filling into your prepared pie crust. Place the pie pan on a baking sheet (this saves you from spills) and bake for 50-60 minutes. The edges should be set, but the center may still jiggle slightly.
Step 5: Cool and Serve
  1. Allow the pie to cool for at least two hours before slicing. This helps the filling set completely.

Notes

  • Chill Your Pie Crust: If you're making the crust from scratch, chilling it for at least 30 minutes helps prevent shrinking.
  • Don’t Overmix: Be gentle when combining the filling; overmixing can lead to a rubbery texture.
  • Watch the Baking Time: Ovens vary, so start checking for doneness a few minutes before the indicated time.
  • Serve at Room Temperature: It’s best enjoyed at room temperature, allowing the flavors to shine.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: High-quality butter, real maple syrup, and fresh eggs make a noticeable difference.
