Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1/2 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 24 egg roll wrappers
  • 12 slices of American cheese, halved
  • 3/4 cup of vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika

Method

Step 1: Cook the Beef
  1. Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the unsalted butter. Once it’s melted, toss in the diced onions and green bell peppers. Sauté them for about 3-4 minutes, until they begin to soften. This step is all about flavor.
Next, add in the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Cook, breaking up the beef until it's browned and cooked through. This process usually takes about 7-10 minutes. Trust me, the aroma will have you almost drooling!
Step 2: Prepare the Egg Rolls
  1. Once the beef is cooked and juicy, it’s time for assembly. Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface. Place a little beef mixture in the center. Top it off with a piece of halved American cheese.
To wrap the egg roll, moisten the edges with a little water. Fold up the bottom, then fold the sides in, and roll tightly towards the top. This keeps everything deliciously sealed inside. Place the finished egg rolls on a tray and repeat until all the filling is used.
Step 3: Fry the Egg Rolls
  1. In a deep skillet, pour in the vegetable oil and heat it to about 350°F. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of egg roll wrapper into it; if it sizzles, you’re ready to fry.
Carefully drop a few egg rolls into the hot oil. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they’re golden brown and crispy. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan; you want to give them room to crisp up nicely.
Step 4: Drain and Cool
  1. Once they are cooked to perfection, remove them from the oil and let them drain on paper towels. This helps get rid of excess oil, keeping them crispy. Wait a minute or two before grabbing one; the filling will be piping hot!

Notes

  • Choose Quality Meat: Lean ground beef works best. It keeps the flavor intense without excess grease.
  • Cheese Options: While American cheese melts beautifully, feel free to mix in provolone or mozzarella for a different flavor.
  • Pre-cooking Veggies: If you prefer a crunchier texture, you can cook the onions and peppers for less time.
  • Adjust Seasoning: Don’t hesitate to add more spices or hot sauce if you like a kick.
  • Monitoring Heat: Keep an eye on oil temperature. Too hot can burn the rolls, while too low can make them greasy.
