Method
Step 1: Sauté the Vegetables
- Start by heating 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook until they become soft and translucent, around 4-5 minutes. Toss in the sliced red and green bell peppers and 2 teaspoons of minced garlic. Season this mix with salt, black pepper, Italian oregano, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook everything together for another 5-6 minutes until the peppers are tender.
Step 2: Cook the Steak
- Push the veggies to the side of the skillet and add the remaining olive oil. Place the sliced steak in the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirring everything together until the meat is browned and cooked through. You want to achieve that perfect sear without overcooking it.
Step 3: Prepare the Garlic Butter
- While the steak is cooking, mix 3 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, and 1 teaspoon of Italian herb blend in a small bowl. This garlic butter is going to elevate the bread.
Step 4: Assemble the Bread
- Slice your French bread in half, lengthwise. Spread that amazing garlic butter generously on the cut sides of the bread. Ensure every nook and cranny is covered!
Step 5: Add the Cheesesteak Mixture
- Layer the steak and vegetable mixture evenly on top of the garlic butter. Don’t be shy—load it on!
Step 6: Cheese It Up
- Sprinkle ¼ cup of finely grated Parmesan cheese over the steak, then place 8 slices of provolone on top. Finally, add 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Go wild; cheese makes everything better.
Step 7: Bake
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the loaded bread on a baking sheet and bake for about 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Step 8: Serve
- Once it’s ready, remove it from the oven, sprinkle with ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley and a dash of crushed red pepper flakes if desired. Slice and serve warm!
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh herbs and quality meats make a big difference in taste.
- Preheat the Oven: A hot oven ensures that the bread stays crisp and that the cheese melts perfectly.
- Experiment with Cheeses: Try mixing different cheeses like cheddar or gouda for varied flavor profiles.
- Chill and Serve Later: You can assemble the bread ahead of time and bake it just before serving.
- Watch the Cheese: If your cheese starts browning too quickly, cover it with foil until it melts to your liking.
