Ingredients

  • 10-12 slices of whole grain or multi-grain bread
  • 8 tablespoons of softened butter or plant-based buttery spread
  • 12-14 ounces of canned wild-caught salmon, drained
  • 1 1/2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 cup of mayonnaise regular or light, adjust for desired creaminess
  • 1 Gala apple, finely diced no need to peel
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground black pepper or more, to taste
  • 2 teaspoons of dried dill weed
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of honey

Method

Step 1: Prepare Your Bread
  1. Start by buttering one side of each slice of bread. Don’t skimp on the butter; a nice golden crust makes all the difference. If you’re opting for a plant-based alternative, that works, too!
Step 2: Mix the Filling
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the canned salmon with shredded Swiss cheese, mayonnaise, diced apple, black pepper, dill weed, lemon juice, and honey. Stir until everything is well combined. The result will be a creamy mixture that smells delightful.
Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich
  1. Place a slice of bread, buttered side down, on a hot skillet. Top it with a generous scoop of the salmon mixture. Cover it with another slice of bread, buttered side up.
Step 4: Grill to Perfection
  1. Cook over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes. Flip the sandwich gently using a spatula once the first side is golden brown. Let it cook another 3-4 minutes on the other side. The cheese should be melted and the bread beautifully browned.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
  1. Slice the sandwich in half and admire its beautiful layers. Serve it warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Don’t rush the grilling process. Allowing each side to develop a golden crust enhances the flavor.
  • Try different cheeses. While Swiss is wonderful, cheddar or gouda also work.
  • Cut your apple finely. This helps to blend the flavor with the other ingredients rather than dominate.
  • For extra creaminess, feel free to add more mayonnaise based on preference.
  • Use fresh herbs if available. Fresh dill can really heighten the flavor profile in this recipe.
