Method
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
- Before cooking, take a moment to prepare everything. Gather your turkey, cheese, mustard, pepper, and butter. Lay everything out on your kitchen counter. This will make the cooking process smoother.
Step 2: Butter the Bread
- Take one slice of bread and spread half of the butter on one side. This will create a crispy and golden exterior when grilled. Repeat this step for the other slice of bread.
Step 3: Assemble Your Sandwich
- Now the fun part begins! On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread a tablespoon of honey mustard evenly. Next, layer the turkey on top of the mustard. Make sure to cover the entire surface for maximum flavor. Follow with the slices of smoked Gouda cheese. Finally, add a pinch of black pepper on top of the cheese. Once you’ve layered your ingredients, place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.
Step 4: Heat Your Pan
- Grab a non-stick skillet and heat it over medium heat. The ideal temperature allows the sandwich to cook evenly without burning. If your pan is too hot, the outside may burn before the inside melts.
Step 5: Grill to Perfection
- Once the pan is heated, carefully place your assembled sandwich in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side or until golden brown. Use a spatula to press down gently to help the cheese melt. After the first side is crisp, carefully flip the sandwich and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
Step 6: Check for Meltiness
- To know if it’s done, lift the sandwich slightly to peek at the bottom. You want both sides to be beautifully toasted. Once the cheese is melted and the bread is golden, take it off the heat.
Step 7: Let It Rest, Then Slice
- Let the sandwich rest for a minute. This helps the cheese set slightly, making it easier to slice. After a brief wait, use a sharp knife to cut it in half, revealing the gooey cheese and turkey inside.
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh bread and quality turkey make a noticeable impact on flavor.
- Control the Heat: Medium heat is best. Too high, and you risk burning while the cheese remains unmelted.
- Experiment with Cheese: If you’re not a Gouda fan, try cheddar, mozzarella, or even havarti.
- Add Veggies: Add spinach or tomatoes for extra nutrients and flavor.
- Try Different Mustards: Spice it up with Dijon or even a spicy brown mustard for a different zing.
